The Challenge: Revitalizing a Niche Record Label

Steadfast Records, a niche record label focusing on hardcore and emo music, was facing challenges with customer engagement and sales, especially between album releases. With an outdated website and fragmented brand identity, it was difficult for customers to discover and purchase products. The key challenge was to create a compelling brand identity and an engaging eCommerce experience with a focus on product discovery, all while working within a limited budget.

Research & Planning: Understanding the Independent Music Market

To ensure the success of this project, I conducted extensive research on the independent music industry. This included:

• Identifying the Target Audience
  I focused on music enthusiasts, vinyl collectors, and fans of emo, hardcore, and adjacent genres. These niche markets have a deep connection with their music, and authenticity was key to reaching them effectively.
• Analyzing Peers & Competitors
  I analyzed other independent record labels with successful eCommerce platforms and strong visual identities. The goal was to find inspiration while creating something distinct for Steadfast Records.

Based on these insights, I developed the following design principles:

  Reflect Steadfast’s genuine passion for music and its commitment to the artists, while maintaining a strong connection with the label’s roots.

  Create visually striking and memorable designs that resonate with the hardcore and emo audience.

  Ensure the eCommerce site is easy to navigate, encouraging product discovery and seamless purchasing.

The Solution: A Comprehensive Design and eCommerce Strategy

1. Reimagining the Visual Identity
   I began by refreshing Steadfast Records' brand identity, including the iconic Black Cat logo, color palette, typography, and other visual elements.
2. Packaging Design for Vinyl Collectors
   Packaging design played a crucial role in this project. Each release featured its own unique artwork, but I also created a center label template.
3. eCommerce Platform Migration & Customization
   Understanding the importance of a streamlined eCommerce experience, I migrated the Steadfast store from Wix to Shopify.
4. Branded Merchandise
   I expanded the product offering to include a range of branded merchandise.
5. Curated Inventory and Product Drops
   I introduced a new system for rolling out inventory—highly curated, regular drops of new records.
